Dan was very impressed with Sasha Fierce's letter that she wrote in Irish American history and wanted to share. Enjoy! August 1950 Ma, I’ve entered into a world of grey. Buildings, suits, complexions. The weak tea I drink now every morning is no substitute for the hearth and fire of home. I’ve landed a job in New York City at a tiny butcher’s shop tucked away in a side street-away from the roaring madness of the city. My pay is minimal, but steady. Enclosed is half of my earnings for the past year. Hopefully, they will last longer than last year’s. I’d hate to come home to an abandoned farm. While Ireland wallows in depression, America seems to have climbed to the top of the economic world. They talk of their own depression, as if they had born the brunt of all the suffering in the world. They will never understand the pain of a truly suffering country. Ireland is full of holes, whether they be in our pockets or our bodies. Hopefully, they’ll all have healed sufficiently in five years time, when I make my journey back to the land of saints and scholars. Your Loving Daughter (Sasha Kudler, CA)
