Fun with Limericks!

This past week, drama was devoted to learning how to write limericks. Edel and Levi assigned each student a specific Irish literary figure that they would need to research and write a limerick on. A limerick is a five line poem written with one couplet and one triplet. If a couplet is a two line rhymed poem, then a triplet would be a three line rhymed poem. The rhyme pattern is a a b b a with lines one, two and five containing three beats and rhyming, and lines three and four having two beats and rhyming. Some people say that the limerick was invented by soldiers returning from France to the Irish town of Limerick in the 1700's. Student's work was judged yesterday and the best limerick is..., There once was a man called Sam Beckett. When writing a poem, he'll totally wreck it! Then one day ol' Sammy got wise, And he won the Nobel Lit. Prize. But, when it comes to math he'll say "Oh feck it!" -Molly Fitzgerald, IL Congratulations Molly! Runner up was Fi. There once was a writer, His name was James Joyce. Paris, Trieste, and Zurich were his spots of choice. He lived how he pleased, Though known as a sleaze. There once was a man from Kentucky, Who was Irish, so thought he was lucky.
